These Guys are Good? (cont.)
Lefty wins playoff with double at San Diego.

...at the San Diego event. In a playoff with Phil Mickelson, Phil, hitting first, cuts his driver into the gunch, unplayable. All Frank needed then, barring a miracle from Phil, was bogey to win. Phil’s shot was effectively a stroke and distance penalty, so even making a birdie with the second ball Phil was doomed to a bogey at best. What does Lickliter do? He follows Phil off the tee with driver himself and where does he hit it? Into the same canyon Phil just found !

What were you thinking Frank? Phil? Don’t you remember the cardinal rule of winning: never defeat yourself ! Make your opponent beat you. Always make sure you have your chance to win. If that means two-iron, 7-iron, 2-putts, so be it.

Have Tiger’s exploits made everyone else think they can pull off the miracle shots? Whatever happened to 2-iron, 7-iron, two-putts, par and win? Jean Van de Velde notwithstanding, it does pay to take the money and run, even if that means just bunting the ball in play and on the green.

Make your bogey and win Frank. Give yourself a putt to tie Phil.

Double wins the playoff at San Diego ?! Keep Frank away from razor blades for a while.
